Singing with Mama

“I’m a lonely little petunia in an onion patch….

When I was a little girl, my room was off the kitchen, so I often heard my mom bustling around the kitchen in the early hours before she would wake us up for school. While making the morning coffee and preparing for the day, she often sang her favorite childhood songs.  Her humming and her singing were such a great start to my day.  It was like burrowing under a favorite comforter while knowing some time remained to enjoy its soothing warmth.  It was comforting and cozy.

When it was my turn to roll out of bed, Mom would open the top half of my Dutch door and often begin singing. I can still hear her belting out, “I’m a lonely little petunia in an onion patch…” or “I’ve got spurs that jingle jangle jingle…As I go riding merrily along..”

Mama loved music and dancing.  She would often talk about the music she enjoyed as a child and a teenager. In high school, the boys teased her and called her Pistol Packin Mama because my mom was so slim her hip bones showed!  She would sometimes play her favorite songs, grab one of us kids, and show us how to dance. She loved to jitterbug and share stories about her high school dances.  She laughed and talked about Elvis Presley and how young girls swooned when he would dance and move his hips.  When the networks decided it was too risque to show Elvis from the waist down, mama stated all the girls were heartbroken.

My family enjoyed our early start.  Our mama made our childhood magical.  What I would give to hear her sing, just one more time, don’t go sitting under the apple tree with anyone else but me…

  1. Such sweet memories. My most precious memories with my mom is probably that she provided a routine that made me feel secure, that included a variety of mindfulness practices outdoors in the woods, and the mountains.
