  1. Hi Ann Marie. I don’t do actual photos much anymore because capturing an image with words is somehow much more satisfying. If a word-image will do, I offer the below, which may someday find itself in a story in my collection, but for now, I would be honored to have it listed with some of your gems.

    From an often shared parental memory, now 24 years old…

    I recall when my daughter was less than a year old and would wake up each night between 1 and 3am. I determined that my wife desperately needed sleep and that because of my job, it was better that I get up to deal with our early riser. I was always groggy and barely awake myself, but had a system setup where I would lift Tori out of her crib to calm her down, then would kick a well-rolled up quilt out from beneath her crib, then a second kick to cause it to unroll across the floor leaving it was laid out like a sleeping bag ready with pillow and folded-back top ready for her and I to crawl into. I would then give her a tight snuggle and, if I did this all fast enough, neither of us were so awake that we couldn’t easily fall back to sleep. For the first week or so of this, I was kind of grouchy about it all, but suddenly realized that all my daughter wanted was me hugging her.

    Good Lord! I thought. Where else would I rather be? For the time she wanted this extra attention, it cemented itself into my mind, and hers (even though she does not recall it directly) as one of the best memories I have of her childhood. I have never regretted a second of the time I invested doing this. To this day, she tells me that there is nothing like a dad-hug.

    God only loans us our kids for what is often too-short a time. Investment in strong memories like this helps when they move on.

    1. Oh Gary…I love this story please share! I am so sorry that I have not responded sooner. I ran away fro a week to the mountains for a Thanksgiving get-away….and the wifi was spotty…and I still do not have a cell phone…I am truly a dinosaur. When I returned, I came back to crazy deadlines and endless piles of work. I have been so exhausted this is the first time I have had to check on my blog, which is rather sad since I love to read and write. So forgive me my friend for being negligent.

I have been asked the following:
1. Two part question- Where were you on Sept 11, 2001? Do you remember the feeling of such fear?
Answer: On that aweful day I was in a hotel in Birmingham, Alabama preparing to make a sales call at a hospital.  I walked downstairs to grab a bite for breakfast when I noticed the events unfolding on the television.  After watching for several minutes I went back to my room and stayed glued to the television for hours.  
I noticed my jaws were hurting as I had unknowingly been clenching my teeth.  The feelings I had were surreal.  I could almost taste the sense of loss and I felt completely and totally helpless.  Horrible times…
2. Where would you like to see yourself 10 years from now?
Answer: Retired!  Seriously!  I was just speaking with my precious wife yesterday about how much time I will spend writing once I’m home all the time.  Well, except when I’m out fishing or golfing or whatever.
3. Do you support the idea of Santa Clause? Do you think Christian parents should or should not allow their children to believe in Santa?
Answer: I do support the idea of Santa Clause!  I enjoyed it as a child and I raised my children the same way.  It is a tradition that I hope we never lose.  My granddaughter (3yr old) loves Santa, too!
I believe, as a Christian, that Santa can be used in multiple ways in teaching our children many lessons.  From behavior patterns with rewards and consequences to giving and sharing.
