Mary Buzzard Hupp: Colonial Wife and Mother

1To date, the oldest member I have discovered in my family tree would be my 4x great grandmother, Mary Buzzard. This grandmother lived for 96 years, and she died just 17 days before her 97th birthday.

Her parents were Henry Buzzard and Elizabeth Ault. She was born on June 2, 1755 in Maryland. When my grandmother arrived, the colonies were in the midst of The French and Indian Wars. After the war, the colonies became increasingly frustrated with the rising taxes that were imposed upon them from Britain. Tempers flared and frustration rose as colonists started reflecting upon their on campaign of freedom.   This mounting disturbance soon gave way, and the American Revolution began as our nation sought freedom from the overbearing nature of England. Mary was 19 years old when this war began.

On July 25, 1782, she married a soldier, a marine who fought for his country’s freedom. Mary Buzzard married Philip Hupp in Hampshire County, Virginia. He served for three years in Virginia’s 13th Regiment under Captain Sullivan, and later, he served in the 9th Regiment too.

The couple eventually settled in Ohio: they lived in Bethel Township, in Monroe County and Duck Creek Valley in Noble County. The couple had nine children. Henry, George, Philip, Catherine, Elizabeth, Francis, Daniel, Emanuel, and Mary.

My grandfather, Philip died on November 9, 1831. My grandmother, Mary died on May 20, 1852. They are buried in the Hessen Family Cemetery in Noble County, Ohio.
