The Object I would Save

Some objects carry more than their shape or purpose; they carry the people, places, and memories we never want to lose. A keepsake, heirloom, recipe card, letter, quilt, piece of jewelry, or everyday item can hold a whole story inside it. This week, I invite you to write about an object you would save and why it matters to you. Please share your story through the link, and I would be honored to feature it on my blog as part of our growing collection of family memories and life stories.

The Christmas Angel

One Christmas, my mom pressed a small, carefully wrapped package into my hands. I remember the crinkle of paper, the hush of anticipation as I lifted the lid. Inside, nestled like a secret, was the loveliest angel. She wore the country style I’ve always loved, all gentle colors and tiny, thoughtful details, as if she had been waiting just for me. In soft, muted colors, her dress was patterned after a quilt, adding to her country charm.

That first year, I tucked her among the Christmas decorations, letting her catch the glow of twinkle lights and the scent of pine. When January came, and the boxes came out, I found I couldn’t put her away. She felt like she belonged here, quietly keeping watch over the ordinary days. So I left her, and she’s stayed with me through every season since.

Every time I pass by, I think of that Christmas and my mom’s hands, the way she smiled as I unwrapped the angel. She’s more than a decoration. She holds a piece of that day, and all the love tucked inside it. If I ever had to choose just one thing to save, I know I’d reach for her. She might not mean much to anyone else, but to me, she’s a reminder that the smallest gifts can hold the most heart. Just looking at her warms my heart and brings a smile to my face.
